Chosen, Loved, and Redeemed

What it means to belong to Christ, live as God's treasured possession, and walk with confidence and gratitude.
Primary Scripture
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”
1 Peter 2:9 (ESV)
Introduction: The Question Every Heart Asks
Deep within every person is the desire to belong.
To be known.
To be loved.
To be wanted.
To be accepted.
We often search for these things in relationships, accomplishments, careers, or the approval of others. Yet no amount of earthly acceptance can satisfy the longing that only God Himself can fulfill.
Before the world assigned labels to you, God had already spoken.
Before others formed opinions about you, God had already set His love upon you.
Before you sought Him, He sought you.
The gospel is not the story of people finding God.
It is the story of God pursuing people.
And through Christ, we are chosen, loved, and redeemed.
Chosen by Grace
Peter reminds believers:
“You are a chosen race…”
Notice what he does not say.
He does not say you are self-made.
He does not say you earned your place.
He does not say you proved yourself worthy.
He says you are chosen.
Being chosen does not mean we deserved God's favor.
It means God, in His mercy and love, set His affection upon us.
Jesus said:
“You did not choose me, but I chose you…”
John 15:16 (ESV)
Our salvation begins not with our pursuit of God, but with His pursuit of us.
Grace is not something we earn.
It is something we receive.
Loved Beyond Measure
One of the enemy's greatest lies is convincing believers that God's love must be maintained through performance.
But God's love is not based on our perfection.
It is rooted in His character.
“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 (ESV)
He loved us before we had everything together.
He loved us before we understood grace.
He loved us in our weakness, brokenness, and need.
His love is not fragile.
His love is steadfast.
His love does not rise and fall with our emotions or circumstances.
Because God is love.
Analogy: The Adopted Child
Imagine a child adopted into a loving family.
That child does not earn the family name.
They receive it.
They do not become sons or daughters through performance.
They belong because they have been chosen.
Likewise, through Christ, believers have been adopted into God's family.
“You have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’”
Romans 8:15 (ESV)
You are not a spiritual orphan.
You are a son.
You are a daughter.
You belong to the King.
Redeemed by the Blood of Christ
Peter later writes:
“Knowing that you were ransomed… not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ…”
1 Peter 1:18–19 (ESV)
Redemption means being bought back.
Sin separated us from God.
But Jesus paid the price we could never pay.
Not with money.
Not with earthly treasures.
But with His own life.
The cross declares your value.
The empty tomb declares your victory.
And redemption declares that your past no longer defines your future.
Because what Christ redeems, He restores.
Living as God's Treasured Possession
Peter says believers are:
“A people for his own possession…”
This means we do not belong to the world.
We do not belong to sin.
We do not belong to fear.
We belong to God.
And belonging changes everything.
It changes how we think.
It changes how we live.
It changes how we see ourselves.
Our identity is no longer found in titles, achievements, relationships, or failures.
Our identity is found in Christ.
The world says:
"Find yourself."
God says:
"Find Me, and you will discover who you truly are."
Walking in Confidence and Gratitude
Confidence rooted in the world says:
"Look at me."
Confidence rooted in Christ says:
"Look what God has done."
We do not walk in arrogance.
We walk in gratitude.
We do not boast in ourselves.
We boast in the grace of God.
Confidence grows when we remember:
I am chosen.
I am loved.
I am redeemed.
I belong to Christ.
And if God has called me His own, I have nothing to prove.
Only Someone to praise.
From Darkness to Marvelous Light
Peter reminds believers that God:
“Called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”
The Christian life is not simply about escaping judgment.
It is about transformation.
Once we were lost.
Now we are found.
Once we were separated.
Now we are reconciled.
Once we walked in darkness.
Now we walk in light.
This new identity is not meant to be hidden.
It is meant to proclaim the greatness of God.
Our lives become testimonies of His grace.
Application for Modern Life
As a DVNTRTH community, we reject the lie that our worth is found in worldly success, appearance, popularity, or approval.
We choose to anchor our identity in Christ.
We are not defined by our past.
We are not enslaved by comparison.
We are not controlled by insecurity.
We are chosen.
Loved.
Redeemed.
And because we belong to Christ, we walk with confidence and gratitude, not because of who we are in ourselves, but because of whose we are.
Reflection and Discussion Questions
Where have I been seeking belonging outside of Christ?
Do I truly believe that I am chosen and loved by God?
What areas of my life are still being defined by my past rather than by God's grace?
How does understanding redemption change the way I view myself?
Am I living with gratitude for what Christ has done for me?
Closing Exhortation
The world offers temporary identities.
Success.
Beauty.
Popularity.
Achievement.
But none of these compare to belonging to Jesus.
You are not forgotten.
You are not overlooked.
You are not abandoned.
You are chosen.
You are loved.
You are redeemed.
And the God who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light will never let you go.
Walk boldly.
Walk humbly.
Walk gratefully.
Because you belong to Him.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing us by Your grace, loving us with an everlasting love, and redeeming us through the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Thank You that our identity is not built upon our accomplishments, failures, or the opinions of others, but upon Your unchanging truth.
Help us to live as Your treasured possession. Teach us to walk in confidence that comes from belonging to You and in gratitude for all that You have done. Remove every lie, insecurity, and fear that tries to define us apart from Christ.
Remind us daily that we are chosen, loved, and redeemed. Strengthen us to live as people who have been called out of darkness and into Your marvelous light. May our lives proclaim Your goodness, reflect Your grace, and bring glory to Your name.
Thank You for making us Your own and for giving us an inheritance that can never fade.
In Jesus' name, AMEN.
