Know Your Enemy: Preparing for Spiritual Battle
Tuesday, July 7th, 2026
Understanding who the enemy is, recognizing his tactics, and standing firm in the victory of Christ.
Primary Scriptures
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
1 Peter 5:8 (ESV)
“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”
Ephesians 6:11 (ESV)
Introduction: The Battle Is Real
Many believers are unprepared for spiritual warfare because they misunderstand the nature of the battle.
Some ignore the enemy altogether.
Others become obsessed with him.
Both extremes are dangerous.
The Bible teaches us neither to fear Satan nor to ignore him.
Instead, we are called to understand his schemes and stand firm in Christ.
Before soldiers enter battle, they study their enemy.
Likewise, believers must understand who our enemy is and how he works—not so we become fearful, but so we become prepared.
Who Is the Enemy?
Our ultimate enemy is not people.
Not governments.
Not political parties.
Not difficult family members.
Not culture itself.
Scripture says:
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness…”
Ephesians 6:12 (ESV)
Behind the brokenness of this world stands a real spiritual enemy.
Satan was created as an angel but rebelled against God because of pride.
He seeks to oppose God's purposes and lead people away from truth.
Jesus described him this way:
“He was a murderer from the beginning… for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
John 8:44 (ESV)
His greatest weapon is deception.
Analogy: A Counterfeit Expert
People who study counterfeit money don't spend most of their time examining fake bills.
They spend countless hours studying the real thing.
That way, when something false appears, they immediately recognize it.
Likewise, believers are not called to become experts on Satan.
We are called to become experts on Christ.
The more we know God's Word, the easier it becomes to recognize the enemy's lies.
The Enemy's Tactics
1. He Lies
From the Garden of Eden, Satan's strategy has remained the same.
“Did God actually say…?”
Genesis 3:1 (ESV)
He questions God's Word.
He twists truth.
He plants doubt.
He whispers:
"God doesn't love you."
"You're too far gone."
"Sin won't hurt you."
"God is holding out on you."
His lies sound convincing because they contain just enough truth to deceive.
That is why we must know Scripture.
2. He Accuses
Scripture calls Satan:
“The accuser of our brothers.”
Revelation 12:10 (ESV)
He reminds believers of their past.
He condemns.
He produces shame.
But conviction comes from the Holy Spirit and leads to repentance.
Condemnation comes from the enemy and leads to despair.
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 8:1 (ESV)
3. He Tempts
The enemy cannot force believers to sin, but he tempts.
He promises pleasure without consequences.
He presents shortcuts.
He appeals to pride, selfishness, and fleshly desires.
He tempted Jesus Himself.
Yet Jesus responded with Scripture.
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Matthew 4:4 (ESV)
4. He Seeks Division
The enemy loves division.
Broken marriages.
Broken churches.
Broken friendships.
Unforgiveness.
Bitterness.
Pride.
He knows that divided believers become weakened believers.
That is why Scripture urges:
“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
Ephesians 4:32 (ESV)
The Enemy Is Powerful—But Not Equal to God
Satan is real.
But he is not God's equal.
God is Creator.
Satan is created.
God is sovereign.
Satan is limited.
God wins.
Christ has already defeated Satan through His death and resurrection.
“He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”
Colossians 2:15 (ESV)
Believers do not fight for victory.
We fight from victory.
How Do We Prepare for Battle?
Put on the Armor of God
Belt of Truth
Breastplate of Righteousness
Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
Shield of Faith
Helmet of Salvation
Sword of the Spirit (God's Word)
Ephesians 6:13-17
Stay in God's Word
Jesus defeated temptation with Scripture.
The Word exposes lies and strengthens faith.
Pray Constantly
Prayer keeps us dependent on God.
“Pray without ceasing.”
1 Thessalonians 5:17 (ESV)
Walk in Community
Isolation makes believers vulnerable.
God designed the church so we can strengthen one another.
Resist the Devil
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
James 4:7 (ESV)
Notice the order.
Submit first.
Resist second.
Victory begins with surrender to God.
Application for Modern Life
As a DVNTRTH community, we must remember that our greatest enemy is not people but spiritual darkness.
We do not fight with hatred.
We fight with truth.
We do not battle with fear.
We battle with faith.
We do not overcome through our strength.
We overcome through Christ.
The enemy wants distraction.
God calls us to devotion.
The enemy wants compromise.
God calls us to holiness.
The enemy wants defeat.
Jesus offers victory.
Reflection and Discussion Questions
Do I recognize that spiritual warfare is real?
Which tactic of the enemy affects me most—lies, accusation, temptation, or division?
Am I daily putting on the armor of God?
How can I become more rooted in God's Word?
Am I fighting in my own strength or depending upon Christ?
Closing Exhortation
A soldier who knows his enemy prepares wisely.
A believer who knows Christ stands confidently.
Satan is real.
But so is God's power.
The battle is fierce.
But the victory belongs to Jesus.
Stand firm.
Stay watchful.
Cling to God's Word.
Walk in prayer.
Put on the armor of God.
And remember:
The Lion of Judah is greater than the roaring lion who seeks to devour.
Because in Christ, the outcome of the war has already been decided.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing the truth about spiritual warfare and for not leaving us defenseless against the enemy. Thank You that through Jesus Christ, victory has already been secured. Help us to remain watchful, sober-minded, and rooted in Your Word.
Teach us to recognize the enemy's lies, resist temptation, reject condemnation, and walk in forgiveness and unity. Strengthen us to put on the full armor of God each day and to depend on Your power rather than our own.
Guard our minds, protect our hearts, and fill us with faith and courage. Remind us that no weapon formed against Your children can ultimately prevail because You are greater than the enemy we face.
Help us to stand firm, trust in Your promises, and fight the good fight of faith with confidence in the finished work of Christ.
Thank You that the battle belongs to You and that through Jesus, we are more than conquerors.
In Jesus' name, AMEN.
