God's Love and the Gift of Free Will

Understanding why God created us with the ability to choose and how His love invites rather than compels.

Primary Scriptures

“We love because he first loved us.”

1 John 4:19 (ESV)

“I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live.”

Deuteronomy 30:19 (ESV)

Introduction: Love Requires a Choice

One of the most common questions people ask is:

"If God loves us, why doesn't He simply make everyone follow Him?"

The answer reveals something beautiful about God's character.

Love cannot be forced.

Love requires a choice.

God did not create robots programmed to obey Him.

He created people made in His image, capable of knowing Him, loving Him, and freely choosing whether to walk with Him.

From the beginning, God's desire has always been relationship.

And genuine relationships require freedom.

God Created Us for Relationship

In the Garden of Eden, God walked with Adam and Eve.

He gave them purpose.

He gave them provision.

He gave them His presence.

But He also gave them a choice.

God placed the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden and instructed them not to eat from it.

“And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat…’”

Genesis 2:16–17 (ESV)

Why would God allow a choice?

Because obedience only has meaning when disobedience is possible.

Love only has meaning when rejection is possible.

Without freedom, there can be no genuine relationship.

Analogy: A Parent and Their Child

Imagine a parent raising a child.

That parent could lock the doors, control every decision, and force obedience.

But would that create love?

No.

Love grows when children freely trust, respect, and love their parents.

Parents desire willing hearts, not forced affection.

Likewise, God desires children who choose Him, not because they are compelled, but because they recognize His goodness and love.

His invitation is always rooted in relationship.

God's Love Is Given Freely

God's love does not depend on our performance.

It begins with Him.

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 5:8 (ESV)

Before we ever sought Him, He loved us.

Before we repented, He pursued us.

Before we understood grace, He demonstrated it through Jesus Christ.

God's love is not earned.

It is offered.

And like every gift, it must be received.

Free Will Is a Gift, Not a Mistake

Many people wonder why God allows people to reject Him.

The answer is because God honors the freedom He has given.

He invites.

He calls.

He convicts.

He pursues.

But He does not force.

Jesus Himself lamented over Jerusalem:

“How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!”

Matthew 23:37 (ESV)

Notice the sadness in Jesus' words.

God's heart is not indifferent.

He desires that people come to Him.

Yet He allows people to choose.

Love never forces.

Love invites.

God Desires That All Would Be Saved

God is not eager to condemn.

He is eager to save.

“The Lord is… patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”

2 Peter 3:9 (ESV)

His desire is that all people would know Him.

This is why He sent Jesus.

This is why He extends grace.

This is why He patiently calls sinners to repentance.

God's love is available to everyone.

But He will not force anyone to receive it.

Choosing Life

Throughout Scripture, God continually places choices before people.

Joshua said:

“Choose this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Joshua 24:15 (ESV)

God invites us to choose Him.

Not because He needs us.

But because He loves us.

And because life is found in Him.

True freedom is not found in doing whatever we want.

True freedom is found in becoming who we were created to be.

Jesus said:

“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

John 8:36 (ESV)

The Greatest Demonstration of Love

The cross reveals both God's love and humanity's choice.

God gave His Son.

Jesus willingly laid down His life.

And now every person is invited to respond.

The invitation remains open.

Not because God is forcing anyone.

But because His love compels Him to reach out.

The cross says:

"I love you."

The empty tomb says:

"There is hope."

And God's Word says:

"Come."

Application for Modern Life

As a DVNTRTH community, we recognize that God never forces Himself upon anyone.

He invites.

He pursues.

He loves.

And because He has given us free will, we are responsible for how we respond.

Every day we choose:

Faith or unbelief.

Truth or compromise.

Obedience or rebellion.

Life or death.

And every day, God's grace remains available.

His mercies are new every morning.

His arms remain open.

And His invitation remains the same:

"Come to Me."

Reflection and Discussion Questions

  1. Why is free will essential to genuine love?

  2. How has God demonstrated His love toward me personally?

  3. Am I responding to God's invitation or resisting it?

  4. In what areas of my life do I struggle to surrender to God?

  5. How does understanding God's love change the way I view Him?

Closing Exhortation

God's love is not controlling.

It is compassionate.

It is patient.

It is sacrificial.

He created you with the ability to choose because He desires a relationship built on love, not coercion.

From the Garden of Eden to the cross of Christ, God has continually extended His hand toward humanity.

And even today, His invitation remains.

Choose life.

Choose truth.

Choose Christ.

Not because you are forced.

But because the One who made you first loved you.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us with an everlasting love and for creating us with the ability to freely choose You. Thank You that Your love is not forced, but freely given, patient, and full of grace. Forgive us for the times we have resisted Your voice and chosen our own ways over Your perfect will.

Help us to understand the depth of Your love and to recognize that every good gift comes from You. Teach us to trust You and willingly surrender our hearts to Your guidance. Thank You for sending Jesus Christ to die for our sins and for opening the door to eternal life through faith in Him.

May we never take Your grace for granted. Help us to choose truth over compromise, obedience over rebellion, and faith over fear. Draw us closer to You and fill our hearts with gratitude for the freedom we have in Christ.

Thank You for pursuing us even when we wander and for never ceasing to call us back to Yourself. May our lives reflect the love You have shown us and may we joyfully choose to follow You each day.

In Jesus' name, AMEN.
